Dollar price today: the robust performance of the U.S. dollar poses a significant challenge to large technology companies and the burgeoning AI sector, potentially dampening the recent rally of the S&P 500.

Rising Dollar Threatens Two Years of S&P 500 and AI Stock Growth

Dollar soars recently, and the surge poses a significant threat to the impressive profit growth seen in the S&P 500 and AI stocks over the past two years. Since September, the dollar has appreciated nearly 7%, nearing its highest level since November 2022.

Concerns Over Revenue Outlook

Analysts are increasingly worried that the strengthening dollar could weaken the revenue prospects for multinational companies. Howard Du, a currency strategist at Bank of America, noted, “This is indeed an unexpected rally for the dollar, which has the most substantial impact on corporate bottom lines.”

Impact on Major Corporations

The strong dollar threatens the profitability of major corporations, particularly as it diminishes export demand and reduces the value of overseas earnings. Delays in tariffs from Canada and Mexico have alleviated some pressure on the dollar, allowing it to continue appreciating.
Many analysts believe that Donald Trump's economic policies have contributed to the dollar's rise. However, S&P 500 multinationals are concerned that the ongoing strength of the dollar could significantly impact their revenue and profits.
Patrick Fruzzetti, a portfolio manager at Rose Advisors, stated that the dollar's strength could jeopardize corporate profits and put pressure on certain segments of their businesses. Goldman Sachs reported that nearly 40% of S&P 500 companies discussed “FX” in their earnings calls, with Apple particularly highlighting potential economic pressures. There are also concerns about Amazon’s first-quarter guidance, which has been tempered by currency-related pressures, even though overall revenue from the previous quarter remained strong.

Historical Context of Dollar Strength

Historically, a strong dollar has led to declines in the S&P 500. For example, during Trump's first term in 2018, a modest rise in the dollar by 10% contributed to a 20% drop in the S&P 500 later that year. Similarly, in 2014, when the dollar increased by over 25%, the S&P 500 companies faced significant declines shortly thereafter.
If history repeats itself, analysts project that if the dollar continues to strengthen through 2025, the S&P 500 may encounter difficulties.

Additional Challenges from Tariffs

In addition to the strong dollar, the 10% tariffs on all Chinese imports are expected to adversely affect the Magnificent Seven stocks. Ryan Grabinski, a strategist, indicated that these tariffs and any potential retaliatory measures from China are of particular concern for these companies. Tesla, for instance, has about 20% of its revenue exposure to China, while Nvidia and Apple have around 16%.

Gina Martin Adams, chief equity strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, pointed out that tariffs may force multinational companies to relocate back to the U.S. or seek alternative trade partners less affected by geopolitical tensions. She warned that if the dollar continues to rise, it could adversely affect stocks like Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Tesla, and Broadcom, particularly because they are more susceptible to currency fluctuations.

Conclusion

The rising dollar presents a formidable challenge to the growth of the S&P 500 and AI stocks, with historical patterns suggesting potential downturns ahead. As companies navigate these pressures, investors will need to remain vigilant regarding the implications of currency strength and trade policies on corporate performance.
